Use Attribute Filters

Property name: Use Attribute Filters (the Filters group)
Description Apply the Attribute Filters

What it does
Switches on the filters of the mesh's attributes, but only those whose own Use Filter is ticked. Under Filters, each attribute has a group with its Use Filter and Invert Filter boxes and its Filter Minimum and Filter Maximum. These are the same settings as on the attribute's own property page (see Attributes Properties). A ticked attribute takes out the triangles whose value lies outside its window, or inside it with Invert Filter. A triangle attribute is read at the triangle itself, a vertex attribute at each of the triangle's corners. A null (no value) counts as outside the window. So while it is ticked, an attribute that is empty over part of the mesh takes that part out: for example, Patch Dip after a filtered run of Grow Planar Patches. An attribute with Use Filter unticked takes nothing out, however its window is set.

The filtered triangles are left out of:

  • Grow Planar Patches and Auto Structural Mapping, which do not grow on them. Filters on the patch layers themselves (Patches, Patch Colour, Patch Dip and the rest) are ignored. A run replaces those layers, so their old windows would only confine the new run to the old patches.
  • Every export of the mesh (right-click it → Export), in any format: the file holds only the triangles the filters keep. The points-only formats, ASCII Points Only and ASCII Petrel Points and Attributes, leave out a point when a ticked vertex attribute filters it, and when ticked triangle attributes filter every triangle that uses it. See Getting Data In and Out.

The box does not hide triangles in the 3D view. When it leaves triangles or points out of an export, the Messages panel says how many, which is the only sign that the file holds part of the mesh. To see an attribute's window on the mesh, tick that attribute's own Use Filter. The Vulkan view then colours the values inside the window and shows the texture outside it. A point cloud's Use Attribute Filters follows the same rule: only the attributes with Use Filter ticked count. Off by default.

When to use it
Use it to confine a patch extraction, or an export, to part of the mesh chosen by attribute value. For example, tick Use Filter on the vertex Dip attribute with its window at 60 to 90, then tick this box, and Grow Planar Patches works on the steep faces only, and an export writes only those faces. Untick the box to bring every triangle back without losing the windows you set.
